How do I ensure accountability when students are working in groups?
Becky Clarke, Jennifer McCarty, Lindsay Wheeler.
Concerns
Solutions
- Off task easily
- Give the students a checklist of requirements for the project.
- Don't pull their own weight
- Rubric
- Formative assessment (observation)
- Assign roles for each student in the group
-Students can't pick their own groups
- Teacher assigns group, but not necessarily assigning the roles within the group.
- Change groups after each project, or very often.
-Keeping busy
- Extenders, journaling (reflection)
-Teacher has to be okay with
noise
- Comes with practice and experience.
-Grade reflecting their work
-Student evaluations of their group members, to be turned in to the teacher.
-Ensuring the student understands the direction
- Model the project
- Formative assessment, observation & one-on-one assistance.
